Wallgänger is a work in progress that began in Genoa in 2017, comprising twenty-two ‘world-drawings’ that reflect on creation, drawing, Time and the poetic discovery of a place. The title borrows the term from Ernst Jünger’s ‘Waldgänger’ – the hermit or solitary wanderer – and draws on the travel narratives of Ella Maillart, Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Nicolas Bouvier.
Here, ‘VVALLGÄNGER’ (with two V’s) refers to my hometown, Vevey. I present here the originals of a new series of twenty-two drawings on tracing paper, along with their serialised versions, screen-printed onto cut-out construction hoardings.
Like a shot/reverse shot of the same work, we see the essence of my creative process as well as its potential intuitive application, where the drawings engage in a dialogue with the random grain of the wood.
I aim to make visible the choices and doubts I face as I explore my practice, by questioning the idea of personal commission and original works, which are reproduced on a medium in a format reminiscent of everyday objects – objects I have always loved and collected.
